Notes:
Thanks to Jeff Johannes for getting the exact personnel info.
Charlie Hulme dug up an article from the December 18, 1971 Melody Maker
entitled "The News From Al". According to this, he was backed on every track but
one by members of the band Quiver. (Brinsley Schwarz play on the remaining track.)
The same source indicates that Al had recorded a version of the tradition medieval
piece "The Lyke Wake Dirge", which was obviously omitted at the last moment.
(The most famous recording of this track is by the Pentangle: see, for example,
their album "Early Classics" [Shanachie 79078].) Among the other tracks mentioned
in the article is "Dance Of The Prunes"; Charlie speculates that this may have
been a working title for "Once An Orange, Always An Orange".
In the article (written by Andrew Means) discusses Al's transition to
historical songs, and quotes Al as saying that "The Night Of The 4th Of May"
'... looks like being the last [love song]. This album is the last of the old
wine, really. It has to be because the affair is ended.'

Notes:
Most sources give 1973 as the date for PP&F, but the copyright
date on the Arista CD is 1974.
A question from Charlie Hulme: on "Past, Present And Future"
and "Modern Times", Peter Wood is consistently referred to
as Peter Woods. Did he change his name (or is it perhaps
a different person)? [Note that in this discography I use
Peter Wood throughout.]

Notes:
The LP was released with very different covers in the US and UK. As Matt
notes, "The US has the all-familiar "Dr. Strange" cover, while the UK LP
has a depressed-looking and backlit Al against a dark background." The
two styles can be seen on the Rhino and BGO re-releases respectively.
(It's not clear if all of the UK releases had the same design. CBS 32019
certainly had the "ugly" dark picture.)
On the 1993 Rhino CD release, "What's Going On" has a longer outro than
on any of the LPs.
The 1993 BGO re-release includes three bonus tracks:
9. News From Spain
10. Elvaston Place
11. Swallow Wind
"News From Spain" was edited into a single release. "Elvaston Place"
was "News From Spain's" B-side. Both of these were collected on the
Japanese Album: "News From Spain (The First Album)" LP, which was a
combination of Bedsitter Images and the "News From Spain" 45.
"Swallow Wind" appeared only on the B-side of the UK "Nostradamus"
single.

Notes:
The MFSL LP is missing the piano intro to "On The Border".
Joel Whitburn mistakenly states in his "Book of Billboard Top Hits" that
the song "Year Of The Cat" is about comedian Tony Hancock. An early draft
of the song was, but the final one owes more to "Casablanca" than to the
suicidal Mr. Hancock.

Subject: Another Al-bum for the Discography
While lurking around a few used/new LP/CD shops, I found one I
hadn't heard of before. It's a sampler promotional LP for the
Indian Summer release. It's Arista SP-119 and has the following
tracks:
[see above]
And the most amazing thing, it was only $2.50!!! So, Geoff,
here's one for the discography.
This, of course, raises further questions. Was this simply a
"Promotional" album for use in radio stations, or was it generally
released? For now, I'll catalog it as a normal release.

Notes:
US release on Passport was eventually caught up in the JEM/Passport
bankruptcy fiasco, in which many artists' material (including the
entire Audion catalogue) was - and remains - embargoed.
Marcy Levy co-wrote Eric Clapton's "Lay Down Sally", and is now
Marcella Detroit of the group Shakespeare's Sister.
The writing credits for "1-2-3" list only the composers of the
original pop song. However everything from about half-way through
the first verse is Al's.
The EMI re-released CD version of "Night Meeting" has a different intro,
about twice as long as the original and with a different instrumental
mix.

Notes:
"Helen And Cassandra" is only on the CD. There are reports of
a version of the LP without "Where Are They Now". The European release
was also on Enigma, but "manufactured and distributed by Virgin",
accoding to Charlie Hulme.
Early versions (1-6) of the discography listed Al as contributing guitar as
well as vocals, but the evidence seems to be that Peter White dissuaded Al
from playing guitar on the recording. If this is correct, "Ghostly Horses
of the Plain" acquires the unique distinction of being the only track on
an Al Stewart album on which Al himself does not play.

Notes:
All songs are mistakenly attributed to Al Stewart and Peter White
even though Peter Wood was the co-author of "Year Of The Cat".
The intro to "Time Passages" is different on this CD. This is basically
the album version sans the keyboard intro (i.e. it's missing about the
first three bars of the album version) and starts with the harpsichord.
"Midnight Rocks" is a remix of the album version, and is about 30 seconds
longer. This is due, in part to a repetition of the "Ah, you know it's easy"
portion of the song. (In Matt's opinion, it's vastly preferable to the album
version. :-) )

The following list shows which Al songs are available on more or less currently available CDs. To avoid complications, I've restricted my attention to the minimum set of albums which gives the most complete coverage. For example, only the BGO version of Modern Times is considered, because of the unique bonus tracks it includes. Similarly only the EMI versions of 24 Carrots and Russians & Americans are considered. (It's worth noting that the Best Of Al Stewart on Arista is included for one track only: the excellent live version of On The Border which originally appeared on Indian Summer/Live.)
The only CD which is getting hard to find at the time of writing is Last Days Of The Century. However Rhymes In Rooms has been seen in cut-price bins around the US, which may presage a short life.
